Best romantic comedy movies you've never seen

Penelope (2006)

Penelope tells the story of a girl of that very same name from a high society family who is looking for a suitor for her happily ever after. Well, actually her mother is the one who wants her to find a suitor. And Penelope is cursed. And has a pig snout. Have we lost you yet? A strange premise, but Penelope is a whimsical romantic comedy that sweeps you up into the magic of the story. The cast includes Christina Ricci, who plays the lead role of Penelope, along with James McAvoy and Peter Dinklage. With such big names, it seems odd that the movie fell under the radar, but it came out in 2006, before Dinklage's now well-known role of Tyrion Lannister on Game of Thrones, and McAvoy's film Atonement had just come out. Another big name in this movie? One of our favorite rom-com ladies, Reese Witherspoon.

Fun fact: Penelope was the first movie from Witherspoon's production company, Type A. In addition, she plays a supporting character in the movie. And it's not like the Witherspoon we've seen before. Speaking with Seventeen, she described her character, saying, "I got to run around the streets of London on that Vespa [motorbike] and got to wear the funny hair, and just be ballsy and funny." Any involvement from Witherspoon, and we're in. The film is feel-good and good for you. Not only does it have romance, but it offers a great message of self-love, too. Witherspoon addressed the topic, explaining, "There's all sorts of different definitions of beauty and that it's about finding what makes you unique. It's important to really know yourself."

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008)

A movie about a governess and a singer in the 1930s, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day tells a tangled tale about a famous singer named Delysia who needs a social secretary and ends up with a nanny, played by Frances McDormand. McDormand's character, Miss Pettigrew, gets in way over her head and caught up in the hectic life of Delysia, played by the always-fabulous Amy Adams. Delysia is juggling three men and depends on Miss Pettigrew's help to sort out her crazy, high society-filled life. The film has the same screwball comedy humor found in movies from the 1930s and 1940s, and Adams and McDormand are pros that fit perfectly together. Time Out London reviewed the two actresses, saying, "Adams is adorable as the wide-eyed would-be starlet, with McDormand spot-on as the sensible half of the odd couple." And if you want even more Miss Pettigrew, start out with the book, written by Winifred Watson, then dive in and watch the movie. Romantic and hilarious, this film truly fits the rom-com genre.

Mr. Right (2015)

Martha is a girl who goes through a breakup when she finds out her boyfriend has been cheating on her. Low and behold, the next day she runs into Francis, a guy she has an immediate connection with and starts to fall for. Typical romantic comedy, right? The perfect guy is just around the corner. But did we mention that Francis is a hitman? Oh, and that he is having trouble with a mob family? Not quite your classic rom-com, but that is what makes Mr. Right so great.

The plot and writing are quirky, and the two leads, Anna Kendrick and Sam Rockwell, are phenomenal. The New York Times described the film as having "Fred Astaire flavor" and had only good things to say about leading lady Kendrick. "Now, with the slick, frenetic confection Mr. Right, she dips into that tricky genre, the hybrid action thriller and romantic comedy — and scores again." It shouldn't shock us that Kendrick is fantastic in this movie, as she has been in pretty much every other film she's done, but this movie slipped by us, and we have to give her some major props for her work here. Another fun fact about Kendrick? Katie Nehra, who plays Kendrick's character's best friend in the film, revealed this to Hollywood Life about her witty co-star: "We had so much fun, and she's a great improviser, so we would improvise in scenes and that's always nice." How can we play Kendrick's best friend? We'll be at the next audition!

Celeste & Jesse Forever (2012)

Not your typical romantic comedy, Celeste & Jesse Forever feels unique because it feels real. This film tells the story of a married couple who decide to separate, but want to continue being friends throughout the process. They blur the lines of still living together for some time while also trying to date and see other people. Although the movie has some dramatic moments, Celeste and Jesse have the same sense of humor, and we see that consistently throughout the film. Their relationship is complicated, as any real relationship is. The New York Times' review of the film is spot on when it says that the writers of this film, Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, "have righted the sex imbalance of the bromance with a story about two people who, together and alone, express an ideal rarely seen in American movies: a man and woman whose equality is burnished in friendship, not just in bed and marriage."

Just as this movie quietly tackles topics past romantic comedies have not, it also seemed to be released quietly, with many not knowing when the film came out. The casting choices were on point, with Rashida Jones playing the practical Celeste and Andy Samberg playing the relaxed artist, Jesse. We have an inside look at their relationship and because of that, we are able to experience the joys and heartache the characters feel. It's a great movie to watch when you do want a laugh with a taste of reality, found in a genre in which we normally experience escape instead of the real world.

The Spectacular Now (2013)

Another film that feels similar to the reality vibes of Celeste & Jesse Forever has to be The Spectacular Now. But instead of a married couple going through a separation, we follow two teens, Aimee and Sutter, who are experiencing first love. The casting of this movie is absolutely perfect, with Shailene Woodley playing book-smart Aimee and Miles Teller playing the more street-smart, partying Sutter. Though very different, they have a connection that draws them together. While we see the dramatic moments that follow young love, we also see the beauty of it. Teller's character brings humor to many scenes, making it easy to see why Woodley's character falls for him. Although not the most well-known film, it became a favorite among critics and its audience. As The Washington Post commented, the movie "proves that revisiting reality can be so much more powerful than avoiding it." The reviewer went on to say, "The movie captures the raw excitement and heartbreak of adolescence so completely that it manages to replace a seen-it-all jaded heart with the butterflies that accompany fresh experiences." Be sure to also check out the book of the same name that this movie is based on, written by Tim Tharp.

Charade (1963)

For this one we're throwing it back, all the way to 1963. Charade is a film starring two of the most well-known actors in film history, Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. But it seems to be one of those hidden gems that not everyone knows about. Hepburn plays Regina "Reggie" Lampert, a widow who is put in a tough spot when it's discovered that her recently deceased husband had worked with three other men to steal a fortune and then abandoned them to keep it all for himself. Those men are now back because they think Reggie knows where the fortune is. Grant's character comes in to help Reggie, and the audience continues to learn surprises about him throughout the film. Charade is a fun movie that's full of suspense, along with the comedy and romance we're wanting to see. It's fun to watch and be transported into the world of the '60s. And we'd be lying if we said Hepburn's clothes weren't a great reason to watch. Seriously, every outfit is fabulous. If you want to see an oldie but a goodie, check out this movie.

Friends With Kids (2011)

Just like many others on this list, Friends With Kids is an unconventional romantic comedy. The film was written, produced, and directed by Jennifer Westfeldt, who also starred in it. The story follows two friends, Julie (played by Westfeldt) and Jason (played by Adam Scott) who start to notice that once their friends have kids, they never seem to be around anymore, and their marriages suffer. The two friends decide to have a child together and then decide to find who they want to marry. As you can imagine, the plot thickens and we see how that decision not only affects Julie and Jason, but their couple friends as well. Westfeldt explained to PopSugar where this plot idea came from. "I mean, so many people in my life at this point have made that profound life change and transition to becoming parents. And I think everybody handles it a little differently… It was really a tapestry of all of those things that I've observed, and then I just added make-believe to it." The film has an impressive list of stars (many who were also in the fantastic film Bridesmaids), including Kristen Wiig, Jon Hamm, Maya Rudolph, Chris O'Dowd, and Megan Fox. But as Rolling Stone says, Westfeldt is the one who steals the show. "In front of the camera and behind it, she's the live current that pulls us in and makes us care."

America's Sweethearts (2001)

America's Sweethearts is a top romantic comedy pick due to its stellar cast. Catherine Zeta-Jones, John Cusack, Julia Roberts, and Billy Crystal star in the film. Seriously, could it get any better? The film follows Crystal's character, Lee Phillips, who is a film publicist and is given the task to promote a film starring two actors who were together and are now going through a split. These actors are played by Zeta-Jones and Cusack. Roberts comes in as Zeta Jones' sister and assistant. The film reminds us of some real Hollywood love stories and breakups we've seen in the tabloids, and we can't help but think these have inspired the movie a bit. With Crystal's ever-present humor and Zeta-Jones, Cusack and Roberts' per-usual fantastic acting chops, it's a movie you can't help but sit back and enjoy.

Never Been Kissed (2009)

We have to include a solid 1990s romantic comedy movie on this list. In Never Been Kissed, Drew Barrymore stars as Josie Geller, a copy editor at the Chicago Sun-Times who goes undercover at a high school to show parents what happens in their kids' lives. Still having never had a real relationship, Barrymore's Geller has to go through the high school experience all over again and has some not-so-pleasant flashbacks to her own high school years. This time around, though, she falls for the English teacher, played by Michael Vartan, and as any good romantic comedy promises, chaos ensues. Barrymore brings laughs to the film, but it's really David Arquette, playing Barrymore's on-screen brother, who delivers the comedy. He also ends up going back to high school, but he's doing it as his second chance of making it big on the baseball field. It's a feel-good film that at the very least it should be checked out for its fabulous '90s fashion and music. Roger Ebert described it well when he said, "Never Been Kissed is not deep or sophisticated, but it's funny and big-hearted and it wins us over." Indeed, we are officially won over.

This 5-year-old is the world's biggest YouTube celebrity

This 5-year-old is the world's biggest YouTube celebritySo what's going on here?

What's going on is Ryan ToysReview, a YouTube channel that emerged last year and promptly began a swift takeover of the internet's attentions. It's not that hard to root out why: toy unboxing is a popular (and profitable) online endeavor, and Ryan is fun to watch doing it. There's a refreshing sense of true amateurishness to the whole operation—where YouTube has in a lot of ways become a mess of staged and overproduced content, the semi-planned spontaneity and half-committed bits of Ryan ToysReview impart legitimate charm. The spirit of a typical video, around 10-15 minutes, is a loosely edited hangout session, which sometimes gets messy.

His parents started it

Though it's no longer at all difficult to imagine a 5-year-old reaching celebrity status in this day and age, no one expects a kid that young to be braving the internet alone. Ryan is no different, and his channel—channels, really, and more on that in a moment—were set up by his parents. However, it must be stressed that they only set up his channels after he asked his mother, "How come I'm not on YouTube when all the other kids are?" Which, to some, is a sort of existential question so paralyzing it might lead one cancel their internet service. But Ryan's mom set things up for him, and production was off and rolling.

Ryan's father provides another reason for the channel: staying connected with long-lost family. "Ryan has a lot of extended family outside of the U.S.," his father told Tubefilter. "So YouTube was a great way to share childhood memories with them. It's also a great way for us to spend more time together as a family and to bond with him,"

The internet noticed, and not everyone was happy

Of course, a force so titanic as Ryan ToysReview can't hit water without making a splash, and his success has made waves across the internet as lines are drawn and other YouTubers prepare to face this new, increasingly dominant menace with the innocent smile. In his video, King of YouTube, Pewdiepie, acknowledged the challenger, posting a video called "THE 5 YEAR OLD THAT WILL SURPASS PEWDIEPIE" with a mixture of trepidation and resolve.

He's doing good in the new year, starting off jockeying for position on the world-wide charts, coming in at second place in the race for eyeballs with 612.8 million views in the week of January 14-20 as reported by Tubefilter.

His videos are actually useful

The most shocking thing about watching these videos is that Ryan's actually a pretty good host, which comes in handy during occasional videos that show excursions to the toy store—fact-finding missions. There are also family game nights, and trips to the amusement park where he gets the whole crew in on the action on sister channel Ryan's Family Review — it's really kind of shocking how there's something here for everybody. If you just want to see cute kids, Ryan's got you covered. If you like to watch a happy, healthy family play together in their home, getting glimpses of real joy that remind you of the good times, then there's plenty of that here.

And if you just want to see if the dang toy is entertaining, your questions will invariably be answered by the comprehensive field test Ryan inflicts on it. Watch one of these videos, and you'll legitimately know whether or not a toy would be a good get for you or your kids. You can see the whole review in Ryan's eyes. It's genius, really. Commercials try to sell you toys—Ryan's videos use the target audience to show you if they're actually any fun.

Ryan's parents buy the toys

As easy as it would be to believe this channel exists solely for Ryan to play with toys funneled to him from gigantic corporations using him as a living advertisement, that simply doesn't seem to be the case here. Ryan's parents insist they pay for all of the toys, with no outstanding agreements with manufacturers to have them shipped directly for an endorsement — although they have begun to get it on the branding game. And for the time being, why would they? With the runaway success of the channel from ramshackle beginnings, it would be foolish to try and improve on what's already working. It's not like they can't afford the toys, now, and those shopping trips can make for some devastatingly cute footage.

Most of the toys go to charity

Another interesting tidbit from an interview with Ryan's parents conducted by TubeFilter is that a lot of the toys Ryan plays with get donated to charity, making this a lot more humanitarian of an endeavor than the Richie Rich scenario it suggests. And no surprise, really. According to Ryan's mom, the family has a room in the house devoted only to toy storage. With twin siblings in the mix, this could spin out of control quickly, and it's good they're not holding onto every toy and making the channel look increasingly like a Fisher-Price sponsored spin-off of Hoarders.

But the family is still raking in the cash

It's a good thing a lot of those toys go to charity, because otherwise, Ryan and his family would probably need a bigger house. And the crazy thing is? At this point, they could probably afford it. YouTube monetization works a little bit differently for every channel, depending on views, ads, subscriptions, etc., but a runaway train successful channel like Ryan's is an almost for-sure moneymaker based on views alone. So much so that the site Nailbuzz has his estimated net worth at a cozy $12 million. (The Verge has his monthly earnings estimated at an easy mil.)

Doesn't it make your bow tie spin, just hearing that amount? It should be noted this is merely an estimation, but even within a large margin of error, that's still "holy-cow-how-did-you-do-this" money. Whatever they're making, it was enough for Ryan's mom to quit her job as a high school chemistry teacher to focus full-time on production, a surreal and thoroughly modern career move that we're all but certain she'll pretty much never regret.

It's more than just the toys

One of the most important things you need to know about this channel is that Ryan is a charming and insightful kid. Inquisitive, excitable, a guy who likes the simple things, like science experiments, and trips to the candy store. "Hearts," he says, pointing at a bin filled up with gummy hearts. And then you smile, because look—hearts! And everything is adorable. Look, it's just cute to watch some kids do this mundane nonsense, okay? Look at what else is on the internet. You can't find that much fault in something this cute and innocent.

The channel ends when Ryan wants it to

Making us all breathe a little easier is the fact that Ryan's mom is on the record saying the videos will stop when Ryan wants them to. But truly, the kid has such natural charisma, we almost hope he doesn't. If he has a hint of self-awareness, he could grow up and host anything. He's got that light in his eyes, that flash of joy that brings you in so invitingly. We want Ryan's teenage dirt bike review. We want Ryan's first pretentious art film review. We want Ryan reviewing cars. Real ones—not R/C. It's ten years later and we still see Chris Crocker, so let's not pretend we won't see this kid hosting the news one day. Keep it up, Ryan. The world is yours to play with, now.

Celebs who can't stand Ariana Grande

Solange Knowles

Solange Knowles is no stranger to Twitter drama, and she used the social media platform to serve up some questionable shade about Grande in December 2013. It all started off innocently enough. Knowles tweeted a SoundCloud link to one of her song's, "Cash In," and a fan tweeted back to compliment her singing skills. Knowles responded to the fan saying, "@Grimezsz Awh man, thanks girl!!! Mutual feelings…. mutual Mariah love (imitation) lol." When the fan told Knowles that she was the better Mariah Carey imitator of the two, Knowles replied, "@Grimezsz No one is better at this than Ariana Grande tho. So ima just chill, lol. Happy Sunday!"

It's no secret that Grande is often compared to Carey, so there are two ways to read this one: Knowles was either praising the little diva, as Vibe suggests, noting that Knowles even attempted to clarify her point by tweeting, "Ps: I am saying Ariana Grande is AMAZING and one of the best vocalist of our time," or Beyonce's baby sister was actually taking a subtle dig at Grande, as others alleged. Knowles has since deleted those tweets, so we'll probably never know the truth, but just to be on the safe side, when these two attend the same functions, Grande should probably take the stairs.

Victoria Justice

It is perhaps one of the worst kept secrets in Nickelodeon history that Grande and fellow Victorious co-star Victoria Justice were not huge fans of each other. The drama started in 2013 when Grande opened up about being bullied to Seventeen magazine. "I worked with someone who told me they'd never like me," she said. "But for some reason, I just felt like I needed her approval. So I started changing myself to please her. It made me stop being social and friendly. I was so unhappy." All roads seemed to lead to Justice, who denied bullying her co-star and called called Seventeen out for alluding to her as the mean girl.

All's well that ends well, right? Wrong. When Victorious was cancelled after three seasons, there was a good deal of speculation as to why the popular teen show had been taken off the air. Following accusations on Twitter that Grande's spin-off Sam & Cat was the reason the show was canned, Grande fired back writing, "Sweetheart the only reason Victorious ended is because 1 girl didn't want to do it. She chose to do a solo tour instead of a cast tour. If we had done a cast tour Nickelodeon would have ordered another season of Victorious while Sam and Cat filmed simultaneously but she chose otherwise." Tabloid consensus cast Justice as the "one girl." In a since-deleted tweet, Justice seemed to fire back at Grande, saying, "Some people would throw some1 that they consider a friend under the bus just 2 make themselves look good #StopBeingAPhony #IfTheyOnlyKnew".

Fast forward to 2015, and Justice is seemingly ready to let bygones be bygones. "These rumors have been going on way too long…there is no feud," she told The Meredith Vieira Show. "We can put this behind us now and we can practice what 'Frozen' preaches, my friends, and let it go. Let's let it go!" However, Grande's mini-reunion with the Victorious cast for her 23rd birthday—sans Justice and co-star Elizabeth Gillies—might mean that these Nick kids aren't quite ready to thaw out their chilly relationship.

Jennette McCurdy

Justice should take solace in the fact that she's not the only co-star who has allegedly felt victimized by the petite pop star. Once again, the drama arose from supposed issues on-set. In 2014, TMZ reported that Jennette McCurdy was being paid less than Grande for her role as Sam Puckett on the Nickelodeon show Sam & Cat, even though the two shared equal billing on the show. Grande's

Grande denied the pay rumors on her Facebook page: "I am NOT making more money than my costar, nor do I think I should be. So we can all move on and get out of our heads that this was a money thing cause I don't play like that at all. I am, have always been and always will be about equality and fairness."

Compare that to the cryptic message McCurdy posted on her Twitter after opting out of Nickelodeon's Kid's Choice Awards in 2014: "I was put in an uncomfortable, compromising, unfair situation (many of you have guessed what it is) and I had to look out for me. I chose to not go because sticking up for what is right and what is fair is what my mom taught me is ALWAYS the most important thing." Just days later,

Just days later, Sam & Cat went on hiatus and by July 2014, the show had been nixed. To add insult to injury, following the show's cancellation, Grande shared a lengthy post expressing her love and gratitude for the short-lived show but conveniently forgetting to give a shout-out to co-star McCurdy.

Big Sean

In August 2014, Big Sean and Grande were spotted holding hands backstage at the MTV Video Music Awards, which all but confirmed that the pair was an item. After a whirlwind eight months that included romantic getaways and PDA-packed red carpet appearances, the couple allegedly "quietly and amicably" ended the relationship. Yep, it was all peace, love, and understanding until Sean scored a feature on Kanye West's song, "Champions," and decided to channel his inner Taylor Swift and allegedly throw a shady verse at his ex. In the track, Sean raps (via Genius): "Lately it's all about Zen and me. Subtractin' the negative energy. With the family, turn your ass to a memory." Sean didn't specify whose derriere he was forgetting, but of course, the tabloids speculated it was Grande, who quickly rebounded with her backup dancer, Ricky Alvarez.

Giuliana Rancic

Giuliana Rancic has been interviewing celebrities for more than 14 years, but it's safe to say that of the hundreds of stars she's chatted up, Grande just might be her least favorite. In 2014, Rancic reportedly went on a rant about Grande's unbearable demands and diva behavior.

In the now deleted video (via In Touch), Rancic calls Grande out for acting like a "young Mariah" and demanding that Rancic switch sides with her during an interview so the camera would show Grande's "good side." Rancic supposedly wasn't pleased because that was also her good side and she "had to fight 13 years to get this side to the camera." (These two have so many first-world problems, right?) You would think that with all their fame and fortune, they could figure out how to even out both sides, but who are we to judge?

Bette Midler

To be fair, the Bette Midler versus Grande drama wasn't completely directed at just the "Dangerous Woman" crooner, but at female pop stars as a whole. In an interview with The Telegraph in 2014, Midler commented on the "pornification" of pop music and decided to use Grande as an example of everything that's wrong with today's artists. "It's terrible! It's always surprising to see someone like Ariana Grande with that silly high voice, a very wholesome voice, slithering around on a couch…looking so ridiculous. I mean, it's silly beyond belief and I don't know who's telling her to do it. I wish they'd stop. But it's not my business, I'm not her mother. Or her manager. Maybe they tell them that's what you've got to do. Sex sells. Sex has always sold."

Needless to say, Grande, who is very vocal about being in charge of her own sexuality, was not impressed. The pop star clapped back with a not-so subtle tweet: "Bette was always a feminist who stood for women being able to do whatever the F they wanted without judgement. not sure where that Bette went…"

Midler went toe-to-toe with the up-and-comer, tweeting a characteristically comedic pseudo-apology: "…all I can say is, 'Spoken like a reformed old whore! She does have a beautiful voice, on a couch or off.'" We can't help but wonder if Midler's response was merely a move to get the Arianators off her back than an actual attempt to bury the hatchet.

Alex DeLeon

As the lead singer for The Cab, Alex DeLeon has only met Grande once, but apparently once was enough. He kept his dislike for the pop star short, not-so sweet, and to the point in a tweet: "hope none of my fans ever have the displeasure of meeting ‪@ArianaGrande. most stuck up, disrespectful person I've ever met in this industry." Wow, tell us how you really feel!

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus and Grande have a very odd relationship. They're either sitting together in Cyrus' backyard in animal onesies having a jam session or Cyrus is calling out Grande in interviews—there is no in-between. In an interview with The New York Times in 2013, Cyrus opened up about the reason she doesn't have many celebrity friends—her image might be bad for their image. She specifically called out Grande and her good girl ways of yesteryear saying, "I was backstage with Ariana Grande. I'm like, 'Walk out with me right now and get this picture, and this will be the best thing that happens to you, because just you associating with me makes you a little less sweet.'" While it might be purely coincidental that Cyrus decided to use Grande as her example, we can't help but wonder if the "Wrecking Ball" singer had grown a wee bit tired of Grande's princess-like behavior.

Chrissy Teigen

Chrissy Teigen is pretty much the undisputed queen of Twitter. The model can spin 140 characters into pure gold, and when the mood strikes her, she can really dish it out. In all honesty, Grande should actually feel honored that Queen Teigen acknowledged her presence. After Grande's 2016 appearance on Saturday Night Life, which, of course, involved her infamous cat ears, Teigen descended from her throne to bestow on us the following: "I love your cat ear headband it alerts me to immediately hate you." Very subtle. When Grande fans fired back, Teigen played dumb, but we find it a bit hard to believe she didn't know what she was doing when she posted that tweet.

Mayim Bialik

The Big Bang Theory (2007-) star Mayim Bialik is not impressed by Grande, and she made those feelings known via a blog for Kveller, a website that describes itself as a place "for those who want to add a Jewish twist to their parenting." In her piece, Bialik slams billboards featuring the "Side to Side" singer, claiming she has "no idea who she is or what she does. Based on the billboard, she sells lingerie. Or stiletto heels. Or plastic surgery…" (Bialik and Midler would get along great!) While the attack is directed at oversexualized billboards, in general, its seems that poor Grande just keeps finding herself as the prime example of things that are wrong with the world.

Mariah Carey

Last but not least, we arrive at public enemy no. 1. Mariah Carey is truly one of a kind (as she would probably tell you herself). Therefore, it can only be assumed that comparing the infamous diva to anyone but herself would be nothing short of treason. Enter Grande. The first day that someone compared Grande to Carey was the last day that these two could co-exist as anything but rivals because Carey is not to be out done, dahling. When asked about Grande being labeled as a "young Mariah" in an interview with The Breakfast Club (via Billboard), Carey did not deign to answer the specific question. "First of all, I'm still young, I discount numbers. Numerically speaking, I stopped counting at 17," she said. "But I wish everybody all the best of luck, and if this is a career path they choose, I hope that they can achieve longevity." Don't think for second Carey was just being nice because Grande has already joined Jennifer Lopez on Mimi's infamous list of people she doesn't know.

Stars who are way younger than you thought

Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie emerged on the Hollywood scene with her role in The Wolf of Wall Street alongside cinema regulars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill. The Australian-born actress played Naomi, DiCaprio's potty-mouthed lover and mother to his child. With revealing outfits and risqué scenes, audiences everywhere assumed Robbie to be older than her then-23 years. In fact, after the movie's release, Jezebel published an article that attempted to prove that Robbie was lying about her age. However, sites like Huffington Post were quick to debunk these claims.

On the topic, Robbie told Elle in a 2015 interview, "People seem outraged that I'm 24. People think I'm a decade older." Today, the blonde beauty, who was born in 1990, is 26 years old, and she has some juicy roles on the horizon, including Gotham City Sirens, where she'll once again don pigtails as Harley Quinn. She's also set to star as Tonya Harding in the upcoming film I, Tonya, which is set to release in 2018.

Kate Upton

Most people see model and sometimes-actress Kate Upton as a huge sex symbol. After her appearance in the 2011 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, she's gained a following of adoring fans that admire her curvy figure and flowing blonde locks. However, many would be surprised to learn that the gorgeous celeb was only 18 years old at the time of her first Sports Illustrated photo shoot. Yes, that's right. Upton was born in 1992.

Today, Upton is 24 years old and has a lot going for her. For one, she's engaged. She debuted her stunning engagement ring on the red carpet at the 2016 Met Gala. Addressing her relationship with Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander (a man nearly 10 years her senior), she shared, "I'm really excited, he asked me right before season started so we've been keeping it on the down low for quite a while." Upton's also has roles in the upcoming films Wild Man and The Layover. An established modeling career, a fiancé, and multiple acting gigs? No wonder fans thought she was older!

Sam Smith

After achieving some success in the U.K. for his music, Sam Smith landed on the U.S. radar in 2014 with the release of his single "Stay with Me." His beautiful vocal delivery of the lyrics had people in awe of the British singer's talents. With his powerful, angelic voice—not to mention his suave style—Smith carried himself like he may have been in his late twenties or early thirties. But that was not the case. The songbird was just 22 years old when his hit song was released.

Now, at 24 years old, Smith still seems young, even after winning four Grammys at the 2015 Grammy Awards. With friends like Katy Perry and Taylor Swift (despite the ladies' infamous feud), he's often the baby of the group, in spite of his mature style and 6'2" frame. These days, Smith's been staying out of the spotlight, though he recently wrote a song for Matt Terry, the winner of the 13th season of the UK's X-Factor. He has a new album coming out soon, though its release isn't his doing. The album, titled Sam Smith Diva Boy, was his original 2008 debut record, and is owned by Flipbook Music. So, if you want to hear an even younger Smith, you may just get your wish.

Dakota Fanning

It certainly feels like Dakota Fanning has been gracing our screens forever. But that just hasn't been the case. The child star began her film-acting career with a role in 2001's I Am Sam opposite mega-actor Sean Penn, earning her a Screen Actors Guild Award at just 8 years old. Since then, she's snagged over 15 roles in movies like War of the Worlds and Hounddog before she even celebrated her 18th birthday. Surely, it would seem that, with such an impressive resume, Fanning must be in her mid to late twenties. However, the talented actress is only 22 years old.

Recently, the young actress worked the pages of Vanity Fair's 2017 Hollywood Issue alongside her 18-year-old sister Elle Fanning and fellow actresses Lupita Nyong'o, Emma Stone, and more. She'll also be returning to the small screen in TNT's latest thriller, The Alienist, as well as starring in the much-anticipated film, Ocean's Eight.

Lorde

Lorde, born as Ella Yelich-O'Connor, has the kind of musical talent that leaves listeners stunned—especially when they find out that the New Zealand native is only 20 years old! Her debut single "Royals" had everyone singing along to their car radios when it was released as a single back in 2013, and earned her two Grammy awards, for Best Pop Solo Performance and Song of the Year, respectively. But fans couldn't believe that, at the time, the indietronic dream was only 16 years old. According to Huffington Post, many internet sleuths imagined a conspiracy around the young singer, theorizing that she was lying about her age. The Hairpin even paid $17.02 for a copy of the singer's New Zealand birth certificate.

How does Lorde herself deal with rumors of her age? She laughs them off. In an interview with Vanity Fair, she playfully introduced herself, "Hi, I'm Ella, and I'm actually 45." Way to keep it light, Lorde!

Saoirse Ronan

The Bronx-born actress of Irish descent grabbed everyone's attention in the 2007 film Atonement, sharing scenes with stars Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. While most child actors don't have the good fortune to star in a major movie at just 12 years old, it's obvious to all who've seen the film that the girl's has serious acting chops. Since gaining exposure in Atonement, Ronan has snagged major roles in works like The Lovely Bones, Hanna, and Brooklyn, which have highlighted her acting abilities and helped her achieve recognition by U.S. audiences—though, many viewers still probably don't know how to correctly say her name (It's pronounced SUR-SHA).

Perhaps Ronan's near-constant roles in dramatic films make the actress appear so much wiser than her years. If we'd seen her in chick-flicks or coming-of-age movies, we'd more easily associate her with the younger crowd and celebrity peers like Justin Bieber. However, the 22-year-old starlet, who was photographed with older, established actresses in Vanity Fair's 2016 Hollywood Issue, appears to be in her late-twenties, despite her beautiful, youthful appearance. Maybe she just has an old soul.

Meghan Trainor

Maybe it was the pastel-rich colors and full-coverage cardigans of Meghan Trainor's past, but the "All About That Bass" singer seemed way older than we'd previously thought. While the overt confidence displayed in her songs suggests a more mature age, Meghan Trainor is actually only 23 years old. In an interview at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, Trainor, who was nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year, stated, "It's crazy. It feels like all my dreams have come true at 21."

Despite some backlash regarding her apparent criticism of "skinny b******" in "All About That Bass," Trainor's focused on loving the skin she's in. At 23 years old, she has more confidence in her appearance and her talent than most women her age. But it's clear she wasn't always pleased with her looks. She told Seventeen, "For a good six years, I wore sweatpants and sweatshirts, even on vacation in 90-degree weather—I was hiding." We're glad those days of constant insecurity are behind her.

Jennifer Lawrence

Actress Jennifer Lawrence has been a Hollywood favorite since her breakthrough performance in the Oscar-nominated indie film Winter's Bone. However, it wasn't until 2012 that Lawrence received international recognition for her roles in The Hunger Games and Silver Linings Playbook. Although the character of Katniss Everdeen is a teenager, Silver Linings Playbook's Tiffany Maxwell is a full-grown, though unstable, adult. As Entertainment Weekly pointed out, Maxwell is supposed to be "much older," an aspect of the book that author Matthew Quick acknowledged was cleverly written around. At the time of casting, Lawrence was just 21 years old—a fresh faced, though by no means inexperienced, addition to the big screen.

Due to her frequent portrayal of older characters, it's easy to mistake Lawrence for an older woman. However, the Kentucky-born actress is only 26 years old. While it may make us scratch our heads in disbelief, at least that means there are many more years ahead of the beloved talent.

Adele

We'd wager that most people wouldn't guess that Adele is only one year older than national treasure/shady celeb Taylor Swift. But it's the truth. In fact, as an article on Bustle points out, Adele's younger than many of our favorite pop stars, including Katy Perry, Kesha, and Ellie Goulding. The soulful British singer is 28 years old and mother to a 4-year-old son named Angelo.

Adele's mature persona is likely due not only to her status as a mother but also to her flexible vocal range. She also tends to dress far more conservatively than many of her peers, opting to wear floor-length gowns (like this beautiful Jenny Packham number) rather than short-shorts and cupcake bras. However, observant fans may have picked up on her age, as each of her albums is named after the age she was during production. In a note on her Twitter page, Adele addressed her age as it related to her latest album, 25. She described turning a quarter of a century old as "teetering on the edge of being an older adolescent and fully-fledged adult." But Adele shouldn't worry about the changes that come with age—she's doing just fine.

12 ways we all ruin our hair

Skipping regular haircuts

If you've ever grown out your hair, then you know how easy it can be to become attached to that extra-long mane. So attached, in fact, many of us skip out on regular trims just to let our hair get a teensy bit longer. And while there's nothing wrong with channeling our inner Rapunzel, waiting too long between trims can actually be damaging those beautiful, long locks.
"Most of the time, people with long hair think getting a haircut is not necessary," Jamielynn De Leon, owner of Rogue House Salon in NYC, told The List. "The truth is, yes, your hair grows from the roots, but the ends of your hair is what is damaged and needs special attention."
De Leon explains that daily use of shampoos that contain harsh sulfates and salts can strip the hair and cause split ends. "Haircuts preserve the integrity of the hair and maintain a fast growth period. A hair dusting, which helps to take out the split ends, is best for those who hate having haircuts," she said. De Leon also advises you can keep your locks looking healthy and beautiful with regular haircuts every two to three months.

Using too much conditioner

Silky soft strands are the Holy Grail of beautiful hair. That's why many of us love to lather up on conditioner like it's going out of style. The more conditioner, the softer the hair, right? Not quite.
"Conditioners are for adding moisture and not making your hair soft as one might think," said De Leon, who also noted that many of her clients misunderstand the proper way to condition their hair. "You might think that you should put conditioner on the scalp, but it should just be used for the ends of the hair."
De Leo also notes that like most shampoos, daily conditioners often contain sulfates, which don't preserve the hair but instead, strip it. Instead, she recommends using a hair mask once or twice a week, depending on how processed your hair is. "Doing so will add proteins and nutrients for the hair," she said.
Celebrity hairstylist, Vernon Francois, who's worked with stars like Lupita Nyong'o, Tracee Ellis Ross and Ruth Negga, recommends indulging in moisturizing oils to keep your hair healthy. "Moroccan argan oil is one of my favorite options because it's easily absorbed by the hair, while being extremely hydrating," he said.

Making hair extensions your BFF

A full head of luxurious extensions might make you feel like J.Lo, but buyer beware. Underneath the surface, they might be doing more harm than good.
"Not having the right type of extensions or maintenance on the hair can cause tears and balding if the hair is being pulled," De Leon warns. "There are many types of extensions these days, my favorite are the tapes in because they are gentle for the hair."
Your best bet is to do your research and find a reputable hairdresser who specializes in extensions. This can help ensure you find the extensions that work best for your particular hair type.

Thinking one brush fits all

While you can save a few extra bucks by sticking to just any old drug store hair brush, this isn't the best way to keep your locks healthy.
"Certain brushes can pull the hair," De Leon said. "Ladies are inclined to use brushes with a lot of bristles, but are not really looking at the labels and the type of bristles." The best tool for your hair, De Leon advises, are soft bristles, "gentle enough to pull through, like the Wet Brush, Teaser, or Mason Pearson." She adds, "Using a comb is always the safest bet, but make sure you're taking the right amount of sections before tearing that hair."

Wearing too-tight updos

Braids and ponytails can be stylish time-savers, especially on days when humidity isn't on our hair's side. But beware of too-tight hairstyles, no matter how sleek they look. "Pulling hair in ponytails can damage your front hairline if it's too tight," said Dani Everson, owner and lead stylist at Clementine's Salon in Denver, Colorado. "Opt for a looser lower ponytail toward the nape of the neck." The same goes for too-tight braids. Everson suggests going for a looser braid look to let your hair breath.
Rubber bands and elastics can also break the hair. "Try using a softer option," Everson said, adding that 80's scrunchies or ribbons are both fun options that won't damage your locks.

Over-using dry shampoo

Just like throwing your hair up in a ponytail, dry shampoo can be a great option when we're in a pinch. And while a quick post-gym spray before an unexpected happy hour is perfectly harmless, you probably don't want to switch out too many regular hair washes with a dry shampoo spritz.
"More recently, I'm seeing more patients losing hair by using dry shampoos too frequently," NYC dermatologist Dhaval G. Bhanusali, MD, told us. "By doing this, you allow for a build-up on the hair shaft that can weigh down the hair, and cause increased inflammation. This can lead to increased susceptibility to damage as well."
Dr. Bhanusali recommends one to two dry shampoo uses per week as a general rule of thumb.

Combing hair when wet

If you're anything like me, you know how dreadful it can be to detangle fine hair. While that quick comb through in the shower definitely saves time (and agony) when trying to detangle your hair later on, this hack could be causing some serious damage. "Wet hair is much more vulnerable and susceptible to breakage," De Leon said. If time permits, she suggests letting your hair dry before combing, making sure to start at the tips of the hair and work up to the roots. "If you must comb wet hair," she notes, "use a wide-toothed comb."

Ironing damp hair

I'm pretty obsessed with my flat iron. And I must admit, when I first heard there was such thing as a wet-to-dry iron (a.k.a. one you can use when your hair is still semi-damp) I thought I had hit the jackpot of time-saving hair hacks. That is, until the first time I used one and was terrified by the sound of my own hair sizzling under the heat. "This is burning your hair dry, causing hair to be brittle," Brooke Richardson, owner of East Edge Salon in Portland, Maine, told me.
It's definitely better to let your hair fully dry before attempting to straighten, even if it does take a bit of extra time.

Combating frizz with heat

Similarly, it can be easy to want to pull out the flat iron any time we wake up with a head full of frizz. But Richardson says ironing frizzy hair is actually counterproductive.
"[Ironing] is not making your hair look less frizzy or damaged," she said. "It is burning damaged pieces off which is causing more breakage."
The same goes for blow-drying your hair with too much heat. "Over-heating the hair with a blow-dryer to achieve a smoother or wavier look is a falsity," said celebrity hair stylist, Sean Donaldson, who has styled Kate Winslet, Kate Upton and Whitney Port, told The List. "The higher heat intensity only breaks and fries the hair. Using a lower temperature will not only protect the hair but you'll get the same results."

Using keratin for perfectly straight hair

While some of us dream of beautiful waves and curls, others see perfectly straight hair as the ultimate in #HairGoals. If you're of the latter group, you may have considered keratin to achieve this look. However, Donaldson says this is a common misconception. "Keratin treatments are not the replacement for relaxing or straightening hair," he explains. "They smooth! They also are not for all hair types and repetitive use can be damaging."

Thinking hairspray doesn't hurt

Hairspray is one of those go-to hair solutions most of us don't think twice about. Pulling your hair back? Add some hairspray. Just finished blowing your hair out? Give it a little hairspray. It seems harmless enough, but according to Richardson, it can also cause our hair to become dull and damaged. "Hair spray is one of the best things to take stains out of clothes and yet we put it in our hair!"
Yikes, think about that the next time you want to reach for that can o' spray.

Using box hair color

Dyeing our hair at home seems like a good idea — it's cheaper, more convenient and takes way less time than a trip to the salon. But if you're committed to healthy hair, Robertson suggests leaving this practice to the pros. "Box color is bad because it's formulated for all hair types, which means it has the highest volume developer," she said.
With an experienced hair stylist, you'll not only get access to salon quality products, you'll make sure the right formula for your hair type ends up on your scalp, and you'll also be sure it's being applied properly. Sounds like a win-win to us.

Innocent People Who Tragically Died While Trying to Take a Selfie

Imagine you are on a holyday with your family or friends. You see something great and you know that a million regular photos has been snapped before, with that exact scene. How to spice things up for your virtual friends and make them hate you more? Of course, take a selfie. Hold right there!
Before you go even further with this idea, you should know that taking a selfie comes with incredible risks attached to it. Driving, flying, or doing any other activity that requires you to focus is from the start not compatible with taking a selfie. If animals are involved, chances are they will not like your idea. And the list goes on. We have chosen 17 innocent people who tragically died while trying to take a selfie in an attempt to raise awareness on the tragic phenomenon. People are dying before or after taking their beloved pics. Is it really worth it?
Taking a selfie has become a second nature for most people and even professional photographers are dropping the charges on this new form of artistic expression. However, with so many cases where things went wrong, some measures need to be taken. Tourist officials are beginning to create selfie free areas, where this dangerous sport is allowed. At the same time, insurance company let no one go on a trip without asking first “Are you going to take a selfie while enjoying your vacation?”.

1. Down The Stairs At The Taj Mahal

With terrorist threats at each step of the way, taking selfies while on vacation might seem the safest thing in the world. This was not the case for a Japanese tourist on vacation in India.
As we all know, taking a selfie with a monument in the background requires not only a long enough selfie-stick, but also some delicate positioning. Trying to get the angle right fully absorbs some people, and it is much easier for them to ignore the risks.
What was supposed to be the perfect vacation photo to make your friends at home jealous ended up with a death certificate. We are curious what happens with social media profiles once the user is dead. Is there a Facebook heaven where you can add God as friend?

2. Bull Fighting Selfie

The running of the bulls is an enduring Spanish tradition and no UN resolution or UE regulation is able to bring it outside the law. Bulls will continue to run, men will die or get injured, while those surviving the experience will have one heck of a story to tell.
Nowadays, a story is nothing without a selfie and there is a growing trend of bull runners risking their odds just for the sake of a memorable pic.
What everyone was expecting really happened in August 2015. A man was gored to death in the Spanish city of Pamplona. The 32-year-old David Lopez was foolish enough to leave the protected area and capture on film a feud between two bulls. Sick of running in vain, the animals sought revenge when they saw the man armed only with the latest iPhone in hands.
We have reasons to believe the man died with a smile on his face. He had fulfilled a life’s goal by taking one of the best selfies ever. Unfortunately, the footage was confiscated and kept as evidence by the police.

3. Happy Car Accident

The new era of selfies is one in which every emotions has be carefully recorded and posted on social media. For this woman, it was enough saying that she is happy. Unfortunately, the selfie she took was the last one.
Courtney Stanford died on April 26, 2014 in North Carolina, when her car veered across the center of the road and collided with ongoing traffic. The car hit a truck just before being sent outside the road and directly into a tree.
Apparently, the woman was listening to Pharrell Williams’s “Happy” song and this distracted her beyond what is considered safe on public roads. Her selfie was so good the family decided to keep it for the funeral.

4. End of Europe Selfie

Before Brexit enthusiasts exult, we are not talking about the end of Europe in the political term. Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of Europe, a nostalgic place to see the Old Continent meet the stormy waters
The place is truly spectacular and visiting without taking at least a selfie can be considered a sin. While taking the regular selfie you see in every touristic guide offers a safe position, going for something extra leaves you at the mercy of fate.
One Polish couple was too obsessed with making their Facebook friends hate their lives and decided to push the envelope. The men and women fell hundreds of meters and died, and all of that was witnessed by their children. Those kids will probably form the small future minority that will ask for selfies to be made illegal.
of the Atlantic Ocean.

5. Last Selfie

What can be better than a son and a mother sharing the same selfie? Most teenager hate their parents for interfering with their social media habits and most of them would see this as a taboo.
However peaceful it might seem, there is something shocking about this particular picture. The flight scheduled to land in Kuala Lumpur and make many dream holidays possible never reached its destination. MH17 was shot by a missile as it went pas Eastern Ukraine.
This selfie was taken and uploaded just seconds before take-off and it helps to remind us of that tragic loss.

6. Deadly Walrus

You probably love animals, but how far are you willing to go in order to take a selfie with your favorite creature? The answer was simple for a Chinese businessman. However, the outcome can haunt the mind of any animal enthusiast.
The man ignored all safety instructions and entered the pool where a 1.5-ton female walrus was doing her daily routines. The man was dragged by the giant beast under water and even one zookeeper got involved in the incident.
Apparently, the walrus wanted only to play and hated selfies more than anything else. Everything was captured by surveillance cameras and the video existed for a limited period on the Internet. Adults prove to have the same dangerous obsession for selfies as their children.

7. The Death Of A Legend

If this selfie seems a bit unprofessional to you, it is because it was taken in 2012, not exactly the most fertile period in terms of phone camera quality. Selfies were quite exotic back then and now suspected what was
Jenni Rivera was a legend of Mexican music and her death shocked everyone. The 43 year old died in a plane crush together with six others. The accident happened on December 9, 2012 and was top news for weeks in a row. The selfie taken above was taken immediately after take-off and it is the last photo we have of Rivera.
While it is highly unlikely for the selfie to have caused the crush, they do have a rule in effect at most airline companies. Mobile phones should be switched off during the flight to avoid damaging on board equipment.
about to happen in the years to come.

8. Grenade Selfie

As you probably expected, Russia is coming strong from behind with cases of selfies turned deadly. While most Russians are far from being considered innocent people, they do deserve our compassion for their tragic losses at the hands of selfies.
One cases stands from the rest because it happened in the military. Two Russian soldiers stationed in the Ural Mountains decided a grenade is enough to spice up their selfie routine. You would give a kidney to take a selfie with a Kalashnikov, but these men scratch their backs with them every day.
We all know how grenades (even new ones) are unreliable and it just happened for the device to explode after the selfie was taken.

9. Posing with a Gun

America is gun country and showing your beloved firearms is close to being a religion there. As the new selfie craze hit our society some years ago, the traditional family photo with firearm was replaced by the more personal selfie with a gunThe scenario is simple and it involves holding the finger on the trigger in a self-menacing way. However, it is easy to forget which button to push. This is exactly what happened with a 43-year-old from Concrete, Washington.
To make matters worse, he was right beside his girlfriend who witnessed the entire scene and, as a bonus, had to repaint the room herself. No pink or red tones for sure.
